TAM Ireland - July 2010 eZine

September 1st will see the start of a new era in TV audience research in Ireland. TAM Ireland, together with Nielsen TV Audience Measurement are bringing in the following enhancements which will further improve what is already the best media measurement system in Ireland.

The principle enhancements to service are:

  • An expanded panel of homes which will be one of the largest per capita in Europe. Previously at 670 homes, now at 800 and rising to 1,050 by September 2012.
  • Major investment in new UNITAM meters which together with enhancements to Arianna will allow Time Shifted Viewing (TSV) to be measured and reported for the first time.
  • Users of TAM Ireland data will still be able to look at "Live" viewing for a daypart, programme or spot as before, but in addition to this will also be able to analyse Viewing On The Same Day As Live (VOSDAL) and also all recorded viewing to that daypart, programme or spot in the following week. This will produce Consolidated viewing i.e. all Live, VOSDAL and recorded viewing in the seven day window.

Time Shifted Viewing (TSV)

When - As a user of TAM Ireland data, you will be able to look at any Time Shifted Viewing to channels (that are members or subscribers to TAM Ireland) recorded from September 1st. The first release of data will be Live and VOSDAL data on September 2nd, for viewing on the previous day i.e. September 1st.

Consolidation Window - The Consolidation Window i.e. the length of time allowed for viewers to watch recorded items, will be 7 days. Early test data shows that 87% of all recorded material is viewed at "play" within a 7 day period, with just over half watched on the day that it is recorded (VOSDAL).

Effect on Viewing – Test data suggests that Total TV viewing will be increased by around 4% for all individuals nationally. Some audiences watch more of their Total TV through TSV than others, with young adults, young housekeepers and housekeepers with children in particular adding significant amounts to their overall viewing after TSV is included.
